Access Microscholarships Programme

The US Embassy’s English Access Microscholarships programme provides a foundation of English language skills to non-elite, 14 – 18 year old students worldwide through afterschool classes and intensive summer learning activities. Access students gain an appreciation for American culture and democratic values, increase their ability to participate successfully in the socio-economic development of their countries, and gain the ability to compete for and participate in future U.S. exchange and study programmes.

Since its inception in 2004, approximately 44,000 students in more than 55 countries have participated in the Access Programme.

The US Embassy and ELS Language Centres’ collaboration started in 2010. Both parties jointly sponsored the students during the whole two year duration of the programme. ELS Malaysia worked alongside its partner to tailor a programme that helped the students improve their English language skills significantly.

Students were taught speaking, reading and writing skills through an interactive approach. These components trained students to study beyond the theoretical rules of the English language and be comfortable using the language itself.
