A colouring contest was organised for all the non-exit levels in 3 categories and the winner of each category was awarded with a box of Chinese fortune cookies. So, while the non-exit levels were engrossed in their colouring contest, the exit levels were busy getting themselves ready for their presentation for the graduation ceremony at 10:15am. The graduation ceremony started with an opening speech by our new Academic Director, Isa Martin who later gave away awards to the best student of the month in Level 103, 106 and 109. Two of the 103 classes combined to give a superb Lion & Dragon Dance Performance, the dragon was cleverly made from newspapers and the lion head & body was made from garbage bags. The performance came with the clown too! The 106 rendered a Chinese song and the 109 class played a game with the audience where the items requested for were all red in colour such as a red book/pen and the rewards were a red can of Coke and a red ang pow. The students were all excited today because ELS has arranged for a real live lion dance performance at 11:30am. The graduation ceremony ended on a positive note with the centre ‘blessed’ by two red lions and the students thrilled with a performance they would never get to see close up.

Students then created their own Buddy Bear to symbolize the amazing international community present in our centres. The Buddy bears promote peace and understanding between different cultures.

A great time and fun was had by all as all students bowled their hearts out! The Bukit Bintang centre bowled their way through the competition winning 1st and 2nd places in the team competition and the all-around Best Bowler award. A team from KLCC took 3rd place. Subang Jaya, the defending champion sent some good teams but came away empty handed. However, all centres were triumphant with the friendships and fun!

In amazing group effort, the Bukit Bintang students, teachers, staff and corporate ELS management came together to raise funds for United Learning Centre – a volunteer run centre located near Bukit Bintang that provides free daily education and childcare for children of Burmese refugees. Several students and staff visited the centre one rainy afternoon in December and presented the refugees and centre staff with food, toys, sports equipment, educational material and other treats. There were plenty of smiles as the children presented an impromptu art “workshop” for the visitors!

The intensive program lasted for two weeks and was held on Mondays to Fridays starting at 10:50a.m and finishing at 5:30p.m.

The intensive program was different from the normal ACCESS classes in that there were no formal reading, writing, grammar and speaking classes. Instead, the students improved their English through workshops such as a communicative English class, a drama workshop and a project and presentation workshop. The aim was to allow the students to build confidence using English while having fun and learning about American culture.

The two elementary classes presented their projects one day before graduation. Each group had chosen a topic related to America or American culture and they presented their report to their friends. Each group came up with a creative way to present their topics and was able to speak confidently in front of their friends and teachers.

On the final day, the two elementary classes and the starter class each presented a drama they had prepared. The elementary classes performed dramas on the history of Thanksgiving and also the story of Columbus’s discovery of America. The starter class performed a jazz chant of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. Each group had worked very hard for the two weeks before and their efforts were evident in the props they created, the songs they sang and their very entertaining performances.

After the performances, awards were given for the best project presentation for the elementary classes, the best overall attendance, and for the overall best student from each class. The graduation day concluded with the students returning to their respective classrooms for a small class party.

The ACCESS intensive program was fun filled as well as educational. Students were able to learn many different skills that will hopefully help them in their future.
