It was a happy and joyful day. Ten students ranging from Level 102 to 108 and two teachers assembled in the library before heading to Penang Road for the trishaw ride. We went in three cars and parked at Muntri Street. Seven trishaws were rented. It was very windy and breezy when we got onto the trishaws. The ride started around 4.15pm, from right outside Cititel Hotel heading to Chulia Street and then to Little India. We stopped at Little India for about 20 minutes to have some Indian snacks such as samosa, vadeh, and banana “kuih”. It turned sunny and hot when we got back on our rides back to the trishaw station. Before heading back, we took a group picture in front of the trishaws. Despite feeling sweaty, we enjoyed ourselves throughout the 45 minutes journey. We hope to go on another trishaw ride some time soon.

UniRazak Visits ELSSJ

ELS Subang Jaya was very pleased to host nine TESL students from University Tun Abdul Razak, Ipoh campus on the 20th April 2012. They were accompanied by their lecturer, Ms Gurdip Saini. As soon as they arrived, they were taken on a brief tour of the center and given a short hands-on session in our Language Technology Centre (LTC). They were then given a short introduction of the history of ELS and the programmes on offer by the Academic Director, Jagjeet Kaur. After that, they were given the opportunity to observe different classes at both the Elementary and Intermediate levels. Lastly, they were invited for light refreshments and a Q & A session. They shared about their classroom observation experiences, which they all had glowing reports about what they had observed. They also asked various questions regarding the curriculum. Our VP, Mr. Robert Brander then spoke to them of the job opportunities at ELS, the Tun Dr Mahathir Scholarship Programme for fresh TESL/TESOL graduates and Associate Instructor positions. They all had positive comments about the center and the classes observed and were really glad for the opportunity given to visit the centre.

ELS Language Centres, Malaysia partnered with AUG student services in Melaka to organise an English camp for Senior Middle 2 and 3 students.
The objective of this event was to educate the students regarding the importance of English, to introduce tools for mastering the language and to be better prepared for their universities and future employment.

There were approximately 380 students who participated in the camp. The organiser had them divided into small groups of 5 to 6 students each. An English team leader was voted for each team to represent their group. Mr. Jeffery Chong from Swinburne University gave his speech on “A self initiated approach to learning English.” The session then followed by a seminar on “Career Path” which was presented by Mr. Andy from Nottingham University.

Students were excited with the games prepared by AUG. There were two activities namely “Order of Alphabets” and “Draw Something” which required students’ problem-solving skills and teamwork to compete.

The ELS presentation was done by Mr. Michael Young, an instructor from ELS Bukit Bintang. He talked about the difference of IELTS and TOEFL, the test structure and tips on how to be prepared and score well in the exam. The information was of great importance for students for when they start planning their futures. It gave them a clear understanding of university admission requirements and helped them to decide on which test would best fit their higher education goal.

On top of that, ELS also sponsored each and every participant a copy of the Just English Magazine to encourage them to develop their reading habits further.

The camp ended with the School Principal giving thanks the organizers and all the speakers for a rewarding and fun-filled event.
